Bra 27 JU 10:

sir,

{

623

Karbour Department,

Hongkong, 21st.May, 1910.

By the 17th. August next I shall have

completed 3 years' service in this Department and I have the honour most respectfully to request that I may be allowed to draw the maximum salary of the post, viz.:- £285 per annum (instead of first increment) from that date.

In support of my application, I beg to

submit the following facts:-

(1),

for

That there was formerly only one salary the post and my predecessor, the late Mr. Meugens enjoyed $2,040 plus exchange compensation which is equivalent to £306 which is

even more than my maximum,

That the work has greatly increased since I

(2).

joined the Department.

(3).

That in Ew lieu of house allowance,

I have

to occupy the quarters at the office thereby involving my attendance to orders and messages through the telephones before and after #ffice hours.

(4).

That I am alse responsible for the clean

and wholesome condition of the premises.

(5).

That the cost of living is tremendously

increased.

(6).

That a comparison between my pay and the

pay of Masters of steamers on the coast contrasts very un- kum -favourably for me, my pay being not equal to a Chief Officer's

pay, viz.:- £240 a year with board and lodging.

I trust that since I have had the honour of working under you I have performed my duties in such a manner as will enable you to kindly move His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government to graciously approve my applica-

-tion.

I have etc., (sd.) A. E. Darey, R.N.R.,

The Harbour Master.

2nd. Boarding Officer.
